#241: A Hospital Designed for the Patient and for the Future: Creating an Accessibility-First, Patient-First Rehab Hospital

Date: Monday, March 20, 2023
Category: General Session

The rehab team at University of Utah had the unique opportunity to design a hospital for the future and for patients. The Craig H Nielsen Rehabilitation Hospital is a testament to what is possible when we ask “what if?” instead of “what cost”. This presentation will review the process and outcomes of this 5-year journey that has produced the most accessible, patient-first rehab hospital of its kind. The goals of this presentation will be to: examine the basic components of a patient-first hospital, share developmental blueprints, and inspire others to create innovative and accessible spaces in their own area or facility.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will describe components of an accessibility first healthcare facility
  2. Participants will explain improved patient outcomes through early access to independence based technology
  3. Participants will be able to identify and discuss the barriers and solutions for creating patient-first spaces.
