RESNA will offer a dedicated student track of workshops at the annual RESNA Conference, June 22-24, 2013 in Bellevue, WA. The goals of the new student track are to promote rehabilitation engineering and assistive technology as a career, and help students develop the necessary skills, resources and contacts to successfully find jobs. The new student track is offered in addition to the RESNA Student Design Competition and the Student Scientific Paper Competition, both long-standing RESNA student programs.
Students who attend the RESNA conference will also receive a free year-long membership to RESNA along with their paid conference registration. The RESNA membership will allow students to build on the contacts and connections they make at the conference, as well as take advantage of professional development opportunities such as educational webinars and publications at the discounted member rate.
While plans are still developing, the dedicated student track will offer five workshops on the following topics:
- Careers in Rehabilitation & Assistive Technology: What are the different career options available in rehabilitation and assistive technology? Hear from professionals working in vocational rehabilitation, research & development, AT in hospitals and schools, rehabilitation engineering provision, academics, and clinical practice. Panel participants will have backgrounds in occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, rehab engineering, special education and more.
- Rehab Engineering for Non-Engineers: Careers in rehabilitation and assistive technology are team-oriented, and chances are even if you are not an engineer, you will have one on your team. Have you ever wanted to know more about what’s going through the mind of the engineer? Have you wondered if you should be insulted when he or she mentions creep? This course will review basic concepts of statics and dynamics, and apply them to assistive technology service concepts in seating and mobility, ergonomics, and job accommodation.
- Peer Review Journals - Behind the Scenes: Find out what goes on behind the scenes of scientific journals like RESNA’s Assistive Technology, including how to enhance your career by becoming an article reviewer, tips for submitting, and the bigger missions that editors are thinking about.
- Presentation Skills: Knowing how to successfully write and present is important to any career. Learn how to present your ideas and findings in front of a professional audience. The workshop will cover both poster and oral presentations.
