The next meeting of RESNA Standards Committee on Air Travel will be held 10 May 2019, virtually using GoToMeeting, 2:00 pm EDT. Virtual meeting call-in information will be distributed prior to the meeting. Meetings are open to anyone; voting on documents requires membership.

The RESNA Standards Committee on Air Travel last met in Phoenix, Arizona at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). Forty-three people participated in this meeting where they observed the loading and unloading of wheelchairs, and reviewed reports from the breakout groups.

The goal of the committee is to develop air travel standards and guidelines for mobility device (e.g., powered wheelchair): design, labeling, information cards, and airport personnel handling and training procedures. RESNA is a standards developing organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The RESNA Assistive Technology Standards Board is the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to ANSI for the development of ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standards pertaining to assistive technology and other products for persons with disabilities.

It is important to the work of the committee that we have participating members from various aspects of air travel and consumers with impairments.  This includes Airline Industry Experts, Consumers/Caregivers, Disability Organizations Representatives, Government, Mobility Device Manufacturers, Research & Development Experts, and Test Labs, Testing Assessment & Clinical Experts.

The committee is currently looking for Government Representatives, Research & Development Experts, and Test Labs, Testing Assessment & Clinical Experts. To become a member, please visit www.resna.org/assistive-technology-standards-board-atsb to go the Standards Membership section, and download the member form for the committee.
