RESNA Standards Committee on Cognitive Accessibility – Meeting Announcement

Date: Wednesday, July 24, 2019
Category: Standards News

The next meeting of RESNA Standards Committee on Cognitive Accessibility will be held 22 August 2019, virtually using GoToMeeting, at 11:00 am PDT. Virtual meeting call-in information will be distributed prior to the meeting. Meetings are open to anyone; voting on documents requires membership.

The RESNA Standards Committee on Cognitive Accessibility last met virtually using GoToMeeting in June 2019. Twelve people participated in this meeting and reviewed the statues of the draft of Sec. 2 on touchscreens, the annual ATC report, the vision for moving forward under new leadership, the outcomes from the ISO TC173/WG10 meeting in Tokyo in April 2019, the use of ANSI/RESNA CA-1 concepts and wording in the new ISO draft reporting standard aligned with ISO DIS 21801, the need for more research on how product design affects usability for people with cognitive disability, ideas for dissemination of information about cognitive accessibility, and the need for sections addressing functional requirements to use specific products.

The goal of the committee is to develop standards that affect people with cognitive impairment, their family members, caregivers, educators, and the manufacturers of technology products they use in daily living. RESNA is a standards developing organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The RESNA Assistive Technology Standards Board is the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to ANSI for the development of ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standards pertaining to assistive technology and other products for persons with disabilities.

It is important to the work of the committee that we have participating members from various aspects of expertise in the field of cognition. This includes Academia Research, Government, Consumers/Caregiver/Advocates, Product Research & Development, and Test Labs, Testing Assessment & Clinical Experts.

The committee is currently looking for members in the categories of Government; Product Research & Development; and Test Labs, Testing Assessment & Clinical Experts.
