The RESNA Standards Committee on Wheelchairs (WCS) has just received approval from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to publish the updated version of the Volume 1 and 2 wheelchair standards:

  • WC-1: Requirements and Test Methods for Wheelchairs (including Scooters)
  • WC-2: Additional Requirements for Wheelchairs (including Scooters) with Electrical Systems

Both volumes have undergone extensive review and revision since the last publication of WC-1 and WC-2 in 2009. WCS worked diligently to harmonize the sections of the RESNA Standards based on the parallel part in the international standards (ISO Standards 7176 series) where possible. For more information about the 20 sections contained in WC-1 and WC-2 or to learn more about the committee, please visit https://m/AT-Standards/Wheelchairs-WCS.

The RESNA Standards Committee on Emergency Stair Travel Devices (ESTD) has also received approval from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to publish a new version of their standard known as ED-1: American National Standard for Evacuation Devices–Volume 1: Emergency Stair Travel Devices Used by Individuals with Disabilities. The ESTD Committee has worked steadily on the proposed revised edition for the past several years.  The goal was to broaden ANSI/RESNA ED‐1:2013, which is specific to track type emergency evacuation devices, so that the performance criteria could be applied to any design type.
